What Is It?

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism, and the fact that your nervous system is responsible for controlling the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body.

The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain.  The spinal cord, which is the vital communication pathway, is covered by 24 moving bones called vertebrae.  Pairs of nerve roots branch off the spinal cord from between each vertebrae to service all the organs and tissues of your body.

Because of the way your spine is designed, improper motion or position of the vertebrae can irritate delicate nerves, therefore interfering with the function of the tissues they control.  This is called a SUBLUXATION.

Many things can cause the vertebrae to lose their normal position or motion including poor posture, accidents, stress and many other everyday activities.

Without a normal nerve supply, affected organs and tissues are more susceptible to disease, eventually producing the symptoms of pain and ill health.

Chiropractors locate and remove these subluxations, therefore improving nervous system function.

Treatment

A chiropractic ADJUSTMENT is the use of a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated or not moving properly.  This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion.  The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and therefore improved health.

There are many ways to adjust the spine.  Usually the doctor’s hands or a specifically designed instrument delivers a brief and highly accurate thrust, whereas others require a slow and constant pressure.

Phases of Care

1. Initial Intensive Care- This is usually where most people begin their chiropractic care.  Visits can be frequent, depending on the severity of your condition.  The primary focus is to reduce or eliminate your most obvious symptoms.

2. Corrective Care- When your ache or pain diminishes, the objective is to stabilize spinal function and promote a more complete healing.  Muscles and soft tissues are strengthened during this stage of care, helping to avoid a relapse.

3. Wellness Care- With the maximum restoration of spinal function, many patients enjoy regular chiropractic checkups.  This type of preventative or wellness care can save time and money by keeping minor problems from becoming more serious.
